Awards and Fellowships:

  1. National research fellowship by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, India in 1991 and 1993, respectively.
  2. Student best paper award by the Computer Society of India in 1995
  3. Certificate of Merit by the Indian Science Congress Association in 1997;
  4. CIMPA (International Center for Pure and Applied Mathematics) -UNESCO fellowship in 1993 to participate in a summer school on Man Machine interfaces in France;
  5. CIMPA-UNESCO-CHINA fellowship to participate in a school in China, in 1999.
  6. Post Doctoral Fellowship from INRIA, France.
  7. Received ICDAR Outstanding Young researcher award from International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR) for his significant impact in the research domain of Indian language Optical Character Recognition.
  8. The Best paper award from the International Conference on Cognition and Recognition, 2005.
  9. JSPS Fellowship from Japan government for collaborative work with Mie University, Japan in 2007.
  10. The paper entitled "Multi-Oriented and Multi-Sized Touching Character Segmentation using Dynamic Programming" co-authored by Partha Pratim Roy, Umapada Pal, Josep Llados and Mathieu Delalandre received the best Student paper award from the 10th International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition, 2009.
  11. The paper entitled "Document-Zone Classification in Torn Documents" co-authored by Sukalpa Chanda, Katrin Franke and Umapada Pal received the IAPR best student paper award at the 12th International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition, 2010.
  12. Received International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR) Fellow award in 2014 for his research contributions to Indian multi-script document processing and handwriting recognition, and service to the IAPR.
